Hi Friends! I hope you are safe and secure and out of the way or Hurricane Irma that is blowing through Florida and now up through Georgia today. We’re experiencing Tropical Storm-force winds and rain here today, and since they cancelled school for today and tomorrow, with the exception of a meeting I had to run to, we’re hanging out at home, hunkered down!
We have had so much going on in the past week and a fun weekend, so I thought I’d write a little Lutons Lately post today, and catch you up!
Weekend with Nana and Pop
We had such a fun visit from Nana and Pop over the weekend! They came up on Friday afternoon, and went with us to pick the kids up from school, which they loved. We hit up Dairy Queen and took them to Downtown Monroe for a fun dinner at Amici (where, in fact, they forgot my dinner order, which didn’t arrive until after everyone was done eating! Otherwise, it was good :)). Brantley had softball practice, and we decided that since it was such a nice night, we’d all go to the fields and watch! Despite the hurricane brewing south of us, we had perfect fall weather all weekend.
Saturday morning, we got up bright and early and headed right back to the ball fields! Ben had a game at 9 am, and was a little rockstar!! He was all over that field, and not only fielded the ball multiple times, but he got three outs all on his own and almost two more. His efforts were rewarded when he got the game ball! He was thrilled and SO PROUD.
After Ben’s game, it was Brantley’s turn (Grayson didn’t have a game this weekend)! Though her team lost, my big girl got a hit every time she got up to bat, played 2nd base and pitcher, and stopped numerous balls that came her way on the field. She had an awesome game!
After the games were over, Nana and Pop took the kids out to lunch and out for some fun, so Scott and I were able to go out to lunch and back home to rest for a while. Early ball games are exhausting! We enjoyed having Nana and Pop here for a quick trip and the kids had a ball!
Joining Choir at Church
So, I finally took the leap and did something that I have been wanting to do ever since we joined our church 2 years ago– I joined the choir!! I have missed singing in a choir for sooooo long, and knew that I wanted to join the choir at some point, but needed the time to be right. But now that the kids are a little older and can mostly get themselves ready for church, and with a little encouragement from Scott and several other folks at church, and a message in a recent sermon that spoke to me, I decided that now was the time! I went to my first rehearsal last Wednesday after small group, and everyone was wonderful. So nice, and everyone seemed to be happy to see a new face! I was a little nervous about how well I would adjust to singing in a choir again, but it all came right. back. It’s second nature and it felt SO GOOD to be singing in a group again. So yesterday was my first Sunday in the choir, and I was nervous, but it went so well! I am so excited to learn more music, and serve our church in a new way.
30 Days of Bible Lettering
I have been participating in a fun Instagram challenge this month- 30 Days of Bible Lettering (@30daysofbiblelettering and #30daysofbiblelettering). There’s a verse everyday and you write it, draw it, paint it, design it, however you’d like and share it on social media. Now I am no artist, but writing each verse each day is fun. Plus, it gets me reflecting and focusing on The Word in a creative way everyday, which is never a bad thing!
Prepping for Disney
The hurricane has changed our travel plans slightly, but we are still on for our trip to Disney next week. I am up to my elbows in packing lists, outfit creation, surprises, and trying to hide it all from the kids! We are still operating a surprise mission, and I cannot believe we are only a week out. I HAVE SO MUCH LEFT TO DO! But of course, our trip to Disney is no big deal compared to the way Hurricane Irma is changing the lives of folks living in Florida, some of my family included. We are keeping up with the weather reports constantly, and praying for our friends and for the citizens of Florida, and my family and their friends in Jacksonville.
Keys for Kids Online Devotional
Anyone else struggle in the mornings getting their kids ready for school? I have one that pops out of bed with a smile, ready to start the day, one that takes a minute to get up but then is all sunshine, and the third that is a grump until we’re out the door. It was spilling over into our ride to school, and I was feeling guilty that the last few minutes of our time together every morning were being spent bickering and being frustrated. So now instead, we listen to a devotional on the way to school! I literally googled “online kids daily devotional,” and Keys for Kids popped up. They offer daily devotionals for kids that you can listen to on their website, download their app and listen there, or have it emailed to you. We listened to it for the first time last week, and the kids asked for it without prompting the next day! It’s simple, short, easily applicable to their lives, and perfect for the ride to school. Now at least I feel like they have a good start to their day, and it starts mine on a good note as well! Check it out here, or download their app in the Google Play Store or iTunes.
A couple of new recipes to try out again this week– here’s what we’ll be eating!
Monday- Vegan Sloppy Joes with Corn on the Cob and Cauliflower Tots
Tuesday- Spaghetti and Salad
Wednesday- Refried Bean Tostadas with Corn, Black Beans, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Salsa and Guacamole with Mexican Street Corn-Style Grilled Zucchini
Thursday- Tofu Banh Mi Bowls (shown above)
Friday-Roasted Vegetable Flatbreads with Mushrooms, Zucchini, Eggplant, Onion, Squash and Asparagus on Garlic Naan with Homemade Hummus
I hope you stay safe as we deal with this unpredictable storm, and are able to stay inside and with your families and loved ones. Not a great way to start the week, but I hope you can manage as best you can. God bless and be careful!
