What I Wore

Hi Friends!  I’m back today with another What I Wore post today.  If you’ve been reading long enough, you know the background behind WIW posts, but if you haven’t read or followed long before, you may be wondering why this crazy girl has pictures of her outfits up on her blog.

When my kids were babies (I don’t have any babies anymore!!!  ***tearssssss***), I stayed in pj’s all day erryday.  I was a busy, tired stay at home mom, and I didn’t leave the house all that often.  It didn’t make sense for me to really get dressed and ready for the day when a) I didn’t have the time or energy, b) I was just going to get thrown up on or peed on anyway, and c) I didn’t want to add to the already ridiculous amount of laundry I was doing!

But after a while, I recognized that the few times I did pull myself together and got dressed, I felt so much better about myself.  I was practicing a little bit of self-care, and putting some effort into the way I looked again.  I wanted to keep that feeling going, so I decided to hold myself accountable and join in The Pleated Poppy’s What I Wore Wednesday post.  I began posting my weekly outfits to inspire myself, maybe even inspire others?  But mostly I wanted to share the idea that sometimes just getting up, taking a shower, doing your hair, and putting some time and effort into yourself can really change your perspective and can be just what you need to get your day going and be productive.  Do I still have jammie days?  Absolutely!  Is this kind of post for everyone?  Probably not!  But I am all about doing things that make me feel good about myself and encouraging others to do the same.

I also love pinning new outfit ideas for things to buy when I’m out shopping or reimagining new ways to use the clothes I already have in my closet.  If I can give a fellow mama an idea for an easy outfit that might make them feel a bit better about themselves, then that’s an awesome bonus!  I never post to brag or show off (ummm, did you notice how often I wear stuff from Wal-Mart??), but to hold my own self accountable and to maybe pass along some outfit ideas. 🙂

SOOO!  With all that being said, here’s what I’ve been wearing!  I haven’t posted outfits since before the New Year, so there are some old ones and a few from recently.  Like I say everytime I post for WIW, I will try to be more consistent in the future!

I am a sucker for neutrals during the colder months, and long cardis, and easy swing dresses. A simple but pulled together outfit of neutrals.

I made this plaid top right before Christmas, and it was perfect for the kids school Christmas parties and celebrations!  The pattern was FREE (the Boho Ruffle Top from See Kate Sew!), and I am so anxious to sew up another few in short sleeved and sleeveless variations for the spring and summer!

I was unsure how I felt about over the knee boots for quite some time.  I was afraid that they would be hard to pull off since I am short and have short legs- but after I tried these on (and picked them up 50% off!), I find that I reach for them more than any other boots in my closet this winter!  The color goes with everything, the block heel gives me some height without being uncomfortable, and I actually think they make my legs look longer!  A feat that is not easily mastered in my experience!

Burnt Orange Embroidered Tunic- Page 6 Boutique

Brown Leggings- Wal-Mart (hard to beat solid leggings for $4.88!)

Loft was having an amazing sale after Christmas, and I was excited to get this navy lace-up sweater there on sale, with an additional 50% off (PS-their sales are SO GOOD)!  We have had only a handful of days cold enough to even wear a sweater this year, so I have reached for it every chance I’ve gotten!  With the boots, of course.

Like I said above, I am a sucker for a loose fitting (forgiving and camoflaging) swing dress.  I wore this to church a few weeks ago for an easy outfit that I could put together amidst the Sunday morning chaos.

Brown Boots- Target (been wearing a LOT of Target lately, evidently!)

I have picked up a few new clients for Magnolia Marketing Group this year, and grown in my responsibilities with a few others.  So I am getting out and going to more work events, which means I am needing some new work clothes!  I used to have a lot of businesswear from waaaaaaaaaay back when I worked in an office, but those clothes were traded in (consigned, sold, and donated) a long time ago, once all the kiddos came along.  I am excited to add some new items into my closet, but am very particular about my choices– I want to make sure that they are versatile, and that I can at least wear them to church or another dressy occasion in addition to work functions.  Bad bathroom selfie shown above, but I LOVE this dress that I wore to a luncheon the other day.  It’s hard to tell, but it’s a black and navy brocade shift with darling balloon sleeves.  And as I am working to find myself in the business world again, clothes that make me feel confident are so important!

Navy and Black Brocade Dress- New York and Company (I found SO MANY great work and casual options here!)

Black Tights- Target

Black Patent Leather Wedges- Belk

Striped Tote- Banana Republic

I had such good luck at New York and Company the week before, that when I had another function (same client- same bathroom too, haha!), I went back again and had the best luck AGAIN!  I saw this embroidered short sleeved shift RIGHT away and knew it was what I wanted.  Not something I can wear all the time, but definitely something for a more special occasion.

Black Pumps- DSW

We had a really warm Sunday last week, so I wanted to wear something 70-degree appropriate, but I am always freezing in church!  So I grabbed my printed shawl and through it over my trusty gray swing dress and peep toe booties, just because I am excited to wear them once spring really does arrive. 🙂

Printed Fringe Shawl- Anthropologie

Peep Toe Booties- Old Navy

Tassel Necklace ( I wear this ALL THE TIME)- Crawford Collections

Back to the old standard mom uniform- tunic, cardi, and booties or flats.  Never fails.  And I am pumped about these nude booties- perfect transitional shoe from winter to spring!

White Tiered Cotton Tunic- TJ Maxx

Skinny Jeans- Target

Perforated Nude Booties- TJ Maxx

And last but not least, another me-made piece!  I was so excited to be chosen as a pattern tester for See Kate Sew to make the amazing Rachel Top.  It is a tunic-style gathered top with an exposed zipper down the back.  If not from this post alone, you know how I feel about tunics, so I LOVED making this garment!!  Pattern testing is so much fun, and I love taking advantage of the opportunities when I have the time.  Working directly with the pattern designers is just the best, and always tests my sewing skills and challenges me in new creative ways.  I can’t wait to make a few more for the springtime- I can see a white eyelet and a seersucker one FOR SURE, and maybe a few dress-length as well?!  In the meantime, I love this marigold one with jeans and my fave boots.
