Four Things We Love About Bennett

On this day, four years ago, I arrived at the hospital about 8:30 in the morning (already 6 centimeters dilated), ready to turn our family of four upside down, and become a family of five.  The little boy that was born just a few hours later (in three pushes) changed our lives infinitely for the better.  And as cliche as it sounds, I simply cannot imagine our family without his spunk, his contagious enthusiasm and energy, his sweet and caring nature, and his big, luminous smile.  To celebrate my Best Buddy Ben’s FOURTH birthday today, I am sharing four (of the millions) things that we love about our Bennett.

Ben is such a Cheerful Morning Person

I wouldn’t classify myself or Scott as “morning people.” We get up early because we are responsible adults, and we have children to take care of and jobs to do, but we are not necessarily happy about it.  Unfortunately, Brantley and Grayson have inherited this trait (and are FAR more unhappy about waking up in the morning than even Scott and I are).  But it skipped over Ben.  My son wakes up with a smile on his face, he stretches, and hops about of bed, ready for the day’s first adventure.  He usually sees me and says, “Good Morning, Mommy!  Can I have some cereal?” Food is always the first thing on his mind (now THAT is perhaps inherited), and then he wants to tell everyone that’s awake, “Good Morning!”  Then it’s onto Legos or Magna Tiles, or a little Disney Junior before school starts.  But always a good mood, and always happy to see everyone.

He is ALLLLL Boy

Ben is a rough-and-tumble, superhero loving, wrestling, football throwing, soccer ball kicking, running full speed everywhere, lego building, train, tractor, and truck obsessed little BOY.  The last few days that I have picked him up from preschool, he is sweaty and disheveled, with dirt smeared across his face, because they have just come from the playground, and he has been going FULL THROTTLE the entire time!

He is SUCH a Good Brother

As much as Ben is a typical boy, Brantley and Grayson are girly girls.  They like dolls and makeup and dancing and playing house, and Ben is so good to play right along with them.  He is always Brantley or Grayson’s boyfriend, or husband (they have all had numerous weddings to each other), or Daddy, or Batman marrying Rapunzel, or whoever he is being instructed to be.  His favorite playmates are his sisters.  When they are at school, he’ll tell me, “I miss my girls.”  And if we run errands and he gets a treat at the store, he is always lobbying for 3 treats, so each of his sisters can have one too.  There are only 3 1/2 years between Ben and Brantley (only 16 months between he and Grayson!), so they are already very close age-wise, but they truly are each others best friends.  He is very protective of Brantley and Grayson, and is so caring and loving towards them.  Obviously  they have their moments (days? weekends?), but when it comes down to it, he is the sweetest brother to “his girls.”

Ben LOVES His Mama

Maybe it’s because he’s my only boy, maybe it’s because he’s my last, my BABY, but there is just something so special about the way I feel about Ben.  Now, I love my girls fiercely and in such wonderfully special ways, but there is something unique about the relationship between a mother and her son.  Sometimes I get overwhelmed with how fast time is passing, and how much he (and his sisters too) is growing.  One day I told him, “Ben, please just stop growing and stay little forever.” He said, “okay, mommy,” and kept on playing.  A little later, he came up to me with a bit of a worried look on his face. “Mommy,” he said, “well, I have to grow up, I just have to.  I’m sorry.  But I will ALWAYS give you ALL my hugs and ALL my kisses.” And he wrapped those sweet little arms around me, and my heart just shattered into a million pieces.  I was equally so sad and so happy at the same time.  This boy just has my heart, and I am so proud to be his mama.

So, happy fourth birthday, my sweet boy.  You are a light in our lives, and adored by everyone you encounter.  I hope your day is full of Batman, chocolate cake, Legos, Chick Fil A, Steak and Brussels Sprouts (as requested for dinner), and all of your other favorite things.  We love you so much, Ben!  Happy Birthday!!
